Japanese Samurai Armor
Edo Period
A good quality edo period Samurai armor, it dates
to the late 1700's.
The Kabuto is a 32 plate Suji kabuto with very nice detail and very good
quality. It has the original lining and neck cord. There is
a mon to each side. The maedate is a lacquered wood one that suits the set
well.
The menpo or mask is a black lacquered iron one with lacquered iron
neck lames and a large mustache. There are a couple of small repairs
that have been done to the lacquer.
The 'Do' is a black lacquered iron plates one with ivory frogs. The
purple cords have been renewed in Japan a long time ago. The laced
plates that hang from it are lacquered iron.
The Sode, or shoulder guards are laquered iron with matching lacing,
and has a decorative top edge.
The Kote are lacquered metal plates over chain mail and backed with
heavy fabric. The shin guards are lacquered metal plates over chain
mail and backed with heavy fabric. The thigh apron has lacquered iron
plates held by chain mail on fabric. The armor box is in good condition
with iron edges, carry handles and lock.
Overall a unusual composite set of Samurai Armor that dates to the
mid Edo period and is in good condition with only a couple of minor breaks
to the lacing (which is usual for armor of this age). It is very well
made and of a high quality. Comes with a Japanese made stand to display
it on.
